This is the only known photo of Sam Sweeney, probably taken when he was a teenager.

Something got fouled up with the tags? Anyway, Sam died in one of two Confederate military hospitals in the town of Orange (Orange Courthouse) VA. There is no record of his burial anywhere. But Confederate soldiers who died in the Orange hospitals were buried about a mile outside of town in a plot set aside for that purpose. This was the beginning of the present Graham Cemetery (Rt. 20 South). After doing research on this and writing an article for the Orange County Historical Society, I am almost 100% positive that Sam was buried in the plot. Unfortunately, recordkeeping on burials at this stage of the War was nonexistent. I ordered at tombstone for Sam, and it has been installed in the plot as a memorial to him. A dedication ceremony is planned for next year in the late Spring.
