"In terms of sound, this weighs against the argument that E major is unsuitable for 5 string banjo. This piece sounds like a typical popular waltz from the late 19th century , arranged for banjo in the usual way of the era. In terms of fingering,…"

Byron Thomas replied to Austin 's discussion How do you separate the music from the racism?
"There are a lot of early pieces for banjo and popular American music (1840's to at least the 1910's) that depicted horrible caricatures of various groups of people. When dealing with this music, I just understand that racist material may…"

Byron Thomas replied to Steve Denholm's discussion Can you identify this banjo?
"Wow what a beautiful instrument! What you have is a 7-string banjo. These were only popular for a few decades before they fell out favor. For your banjo, I do recommend fitting your strings with a proper 7 string set from Clifford Essex. From what I…"

Byron Thomas replied to Austin 's discussion Is it normal to like a 5/8 bridge more?
"You can have a 5/8 in. if you choose but you will have to account for the extra height, especially if the regal doesn't have a back angle. From my understanding, bridges made for banjos of the classic era were 1/2 in."

I've been playing around with a 7 string banjo for about 6 months now and I'm am now looking for some 7 string sheet music. I'm currently working through what is available for the scan of  Ellis' Thorough School for the 6 or 7 String Banjo which is missing pages but is still a pretty solid Tutor. I already found posting with The Devil Still Pursues Her and Horace Weston's Grand March which are both great pieces if anyone ever wants to tackle them on the 7. Grand March is looking to be a…
