I received an email from our friend Ray Jones in Australia. (Where have you been Ray??)

He thought that you may like to read it, but Ray, we all already know that being banjo players immediately makes us irresistible to women :-)

From Ray:

My wife, who is an avid reader, has been recently absorbed in the 'Miss Fisher Murder Mysteries' by Kerry Greenwood.

  

The stories take place in Melbourne, Australia, during the 1920's.    Miss Phryne Fisher is the main character, unflappable, young and the elegant solver of crimes in these novels, albeit somewhat promiscuous at times.   A Femme Fatal poised holding a long cigarette holder and lounging in a sleek silk dressing gown.  She certainly makes the most of being a liberated woman, during the Jazz Age.

Knowing it would be of interest to me, my wife could not resist reading aloud to me several passages from one of the books that could cause us banjo players to prick up our ears and raise our eyebrows.   Quote.." he thrust out his strong arm to steady her"   ( The plot thickens )  Miss Fisher attributes this to the fact that his muscular arms are mainly due to him being  ( wait for it ) a banjo player.   Where have you heard a statement like that before?

In another passage Miss Fisher points out that having kissed most of the men in the orchestra, ( as is her want) she discovered that the trumpet players left much to be desired, the reason being simply that playing the trumpet caused a rough callous to form on the lips making the act of kissing  most unsatisfactory.    On the other hand, she stipulates that embracing a banjo player is a different matter entirely, an experience which appeared  to be extremely pleasurable and sensuous.   ( I'll drink to that )

It's refreshing to hear banjo players getting a mention in the affirmative these days.   I never realised that playing the banjo could have so many attributes.  So hold your heads up high and contemplate these words of encouragement to urge you on to greater achievements.   Yes, practice, practice, practice.
