Banjo and mandolin duets?

"Doug Back (the banjoist on the album) is a member here (rarely says anything). You might try to PM him. Sometime artists get a stock of recordings to sell or give away. I've gotten old, out of print LPs from a couple of recording artists who…"

"Very interesting, Tony! It's so odd that the three were rarely combined. I'll have to look to see which 1st banjo parts might work on mandolin. Whether anyone I know will consent to play alongside banjo is another matter... Arrangements…"

"Steven, you have hit on a bit of an anomaly of the classic era: in spite of BMG - banjo, mandolin and guitar - being a common combination of letters, the presence of musical trios of banjos, mandolins and guitars seems to be a rarity.  From my…"

Banjo and mandolin duets?

Does anyone here know of any from the classic era? I would have thought mandolin with banjo accompaniment would have been used, even if perhaps the balance might have been problematic. But I haven't yet come across any scores in BMG etc. (only guitar and mandolin). I'd be grateful for any help.See More

"It may not produce a suitable sound for classic banjo, a genre where snap, crackle and pop is often a virtue."

"The recorded sound of  the inside of a banjo is usually on the bass-y side. Adding some of this sound to the main front mic can add some extra "body" to the sound. Too much of this and the banjo looses crispness. But just a bit is, in…"

"Thanks Jody. Sorry I only just discovered your comment! Basically, I need to experiment more. Placing a mic behind banjo is a curious idea indeed."

"Mic placement depends on what kind of mic is being used, the sonic characteristics of the room (or outdoor space) where the banjo is being played, and what the actual banjo sound is. The latter depends on the player's touch as much as the type…"

"Thanks Russ. For me, that just results in distorted audio, unless the audio levels are extremely low. I was more thinking about which part of the banjo the mic should be pointed towards."
