Making balanced sets of strings

For those of you who purchase individual strings rather than packaged sets, how do you calculate what gauges to get in order to achieve a balanced tension across all the strings?  How does a wound nylon 4th fit into the equation?  I'm looking at these strings, specifically the rectified nylon and silverwound lute strings:

For a while I've been trying to find a source for strings in period-correct gauges, and I'm happy to have found these.  I'd like to make a set using a .016 first and fifth.
