Yah, I've been messing around again. Here's me trying to emulate Mr Harrison's lovely arrangements. Botsford was a yeomanlike ragtimer with his most notable work being 1908's "Black and White Rag". He essentially stopped writing in the 20s and died in 1949.

I have arranged this (from the Piano Score, transposed from G/C to C/F) for Banjo Orchestra. The 1st banjo part makes a decent stand-alone solo but I thought it a bit thin...so I brought in the 2nd and Cello banjos.

I'll post the solo and the mp3 file here...but will send the whole shootin' match to Ian for the library.

Great stuff Marc,

Good to see that you are keeping busy while in hiding from Covid (as we are in the UK!). Yes, send over the files and I will edit them so that they can be uploaded to the MUSIC LIBRARY.

Looks like they made it into the Library nicely. Thank you Ian!

Of course, if anyone finds errors or sees something that needs fixing, let me know.

There is a really weird chord in m65, I think it is a Cmaj7-9...but it sounds like a clinker. Its in the original score as a Gadd2 (I think) but it sounded so out-of-place, I 'softened' it a bit (it still sounds wrong...just less wrong). I listened to a guy actually playing it on the piano (horrifically fast) and it is there...but it goes by so fast...

In measure 65 if the second B reverts to B flat as in the key signature, the chord is a garden variety C7. It has 1 (c), 3 (e) and flat 7 (b flat). All that is lacking for the complete 4 note chord is the 5 (g).  But yeah, if the B stays natural then "incandescent " becomes "cacaphonic".

Hi marc, That's a great arrangement of one of Botsford's rags that I hadn't heard before. It works very well on banjo and is now on my play list. When I do  arrangements, it's rare not find at least one or two errors on the piano score, I agree with Jody that the second B in bar 65 probably should be a Bb....Steve.

Jody, the solo chord is indeed a C7, I was looking at the whole score and getting that 9 (the two other banjos are playing D notes).

LOL, I found the source of the problem...my copy.

What happened is that I chose the wrong score. The one I used came from a 'ragtime' site and it is a transcription. It is a larger and cleaner print (easier on the eyes). Now I find it has this error!

The scan of the original shows the correct and less cacophonic chord. I'll update my file and get Ian to replace the old ones.

This is yet another reason I love this site. Thanks y'all!

PS. Steve, your fault for me attempting "Incandescent Rag". I almost always read your posts and head out to YouTube to hear Ragtime Dorian Henry's piano versions of the tunes. I'm not a good enough reader to see how you've made your arrangements...but my ears can hear the differences. Of course, YouTube offers suggestions for other videos off to the side of the screen and "Incandescent" caught my eye.
