Homer Denney was born in Gallipolis, Ohio, in 1885 and after learning piano as a youngster, he worked for many years as a Calliope player on the Island Queen steamboat on the Ohio river. Between 1905 and 1910 he composed and published 8 ragtime tunes and a couple of songs. Chimes is one of his later ones and is described as a novelty rag.

Denney had his own distinctive style and his tunes didn't always follow the ragtime norms of the time. This one is no different, it begins with a series of grace notes which can best be played using snaps (pull offs). The chimes, from which the tune takes its name, can be heard in the 5th part between bars 74-90.

The piano score was written in F/Bb and I have set it in G/C for ease of playing and I have added my usual annotations with plenty of fret numbers and position indicators. It's an interesting composition and works pretty well on banjo. The score and midi are in the library...Steve.
