Jody was playing with Peter Rowan at the nearby Didmarton Bluegrass Festival and called in to the Backwell Banjo Rally to play a few tunes for us. One of the tunes was 'Cupid's Arrow' and I was playing the accompaniment.

That brings back good memories, Richard. Your accompaniment was very very good.  I played something... I can't remember what now, where my memory froze. I just couldn't remember the next phrase. The audience, being almost entirely banjo players, was very accepting of this. They were probably each glad it wasn't happening to them instead of me.  I also noticed that I selected the right clothing for the occasion. Most of the attendees wore a blue shirt, as did I (it was clean so I wore it)  so I fit right in, though that was mostly down to how welcoming everyone was. I also remember that David Wade had just had some valuable and personally precious banjos stolen from his car on his way to the rally.  His relative serenity under the circumstances was admirable.  I'm trying to recall my program, selected on the spot. Cupid's Arrow, as you say, Yeoman's Call (Cammeyer, in C minor), Pensacola,  and ?   I'm playing Tom Ryan's CE ConcertGrand which he kindly offered to let me use.  I remember a banjo history quiz!  The questions were obscure and the answers as well. I got about 10% correct. Yes, it was a really good time. 2010 I think.

I always enjoy the get together at Backwell, the event started around 1990 and continues to attract a good crowd. Thank you for your kind words about my accompaniment, I've been fortunate in that I can sight read quite well and I enjoy playing second banjo. Let's hope that Backwell goes ahead this year as everything else seems to have been cancelled due to the world crisis.
