Short Readings for Performance -- Poems, Prose, any Recommendations?

My Dear Friends,

You've been so helpful to me in the past with my requests. Well, now I have some Very Big News which is accompanied by another request:

The Big News is that my Joe Morley album is now available in physical form. (It will be available for digital download and streaming in January.) To order a copy (and Christmas IS just around the corner!) or to simply read more about the album follow this link: https://oldtimetikiparlour.com/product/aaron-jonah-lewis-mozart-of-...

For my CD release concerts I have invited some special guest performers to read various poems or tell jokes that I can tie in with the rest of the program. My thinking is that some people will be relieved to hear some text delivered by human voice when all the rest of the program is instrumental banjo music.

Now, here comes my request: Can you recommend some short readings (around 3 minutes, no more than a couple of pages long) that deal with the banjo, how wonderful the banjo is, the effect banjo music can have, how it is such a joy to play and to hear, etc. etc.?

These readings can be very short, they can be humorous or serious, I only ask that the author's name and any date of publication and name of periodical be included, if such information is available.

And if anyone on here will be in southeast Michigan in January (or if you know anyone who will be in southeast Michigan in early January), my shows are taking place at Cliff Bell's in Detroit on 5 January and at The Ark in Ann Arbor on 16 January. Most of the show will consist of me with my accompanist playing Morley pieces from the album, but we are also playing a variety of other material and including special guests on banjo-ukulele, second banjo, and cello as well.

Thank you and have a wonderful day. I look forward to seeing what you send!

The Banjo At The South Pole is a good one. Here is a version edited for time considerations:

The Preston Sturges essay on Pollution of The Blood never fails to amuse:

Hi Aaron

Congrats on your new album - my copy is hopefully winging it's way across the pond in time for Xmas!  I don't know if you subscribe to Banjo Newsletter but the new Dec 19 edition features a poem: 'Ode to the Banjo' by Tim Seibles.

I've also uploaded an advert to my photos that you might find amusing!

Good stuff! Thanks Jody.

Hi Carrie, Thanks for the ideas, and thanks for ordering the CD. I’ll check out the advert and the poem.
