Here's a SoundCloud link to 27 minutes's worth of Cammeyer on a Temlett zither banjo. I hope you like it. Ian, let me know if you want mp3 files for your jukebox.

I've loved exploring Cammeyer's music, and even contemplated making a full album, but who would buy it? About three people (said he with uncharacteristic optimism!)? But the point is to encourage people to hear these fine compositions.

Oops, I had them marked Private, but they are now Public.

Very cool, Rob. Thank you!

Thanks, Marc. I could rely on you to comment.

A nice selection of Cam's work, my favourite amongst them is the 'Fireside Idyll' , very sensitively played. I could just picture Annie and Cam by the fire on a winter's evening, the flames reflected in the varnish of the Vibrante, a glass of vintage 'jump' in Annie's pale skinned, almost translucent, hand. Bernard Sheaff perhaps, sat on the sofa lost in quiet contemplation munching on a potted meat sandwich, Joe Morley smiling to himself by the aspidistra, a bottle of Bass No.1 Imperial Stout to hand and a couple of saveloys and a pork pie with pickles in front of him.

LOL, I had to look up "aspidistra" and "saveloy".

Very nice descriptive vignette. In my mind the whole scene is soft-focus.

I've always wanted to try a pork pie. Nothing like that here. Saveloys...just a different name for a pork hot-dog, I find.

Thanks, Richard. I'm particularly pleased you enjoyed the Fireside Idyl, one of my favourite pieces. Quite a scene you've conjured up!

I would imagine that a lot of the banjo gatherings would be quite soft focus judging from Cam's reminiscences. The firelight would have also been reflected from Annie's diamonds her father being a prominent jeweller on fashionable Jermyn Street. I don't see Saveloys  or Polony for sale these days, i suppose that somebody must still make them. Pork pies are a kind of religion in the UK, everybody claims that their local model is the best;  round my area of country, South Yorkshire, the pork pie king is called Percy Copley and his pie shop is in a place called Jump, near Barnsley.

Pork pies are more an English thing than a UK thing. Pork is not a meat Scots go for, though I can't say why. Same in NI. Not sure about Wales.

Ya learn something new every day!

Alabama is almost entirely bereft of sheep...just not done. 10 yrs ago, you would not have found lamb in any butcher shop within 200 mi of here. Now I can get it in the local supermarket...but very expensive.

I just wait until I'm having dinner with my Greek inlaws...get all the lamb I want!

Ha, I didn't think there'd be a wiki entry on it. They treat is purely historically, but I never had pork when I was a kid, and my wife insists this be a pork-free house. People are strange. Anyway, it prevents us from talking about Cammeyer, his music, and the recordings. :-)

I've no idea how my last post got formatted like that!

There is sound science behind pork being taboo, in ancient times it was noticed that people who ate pork sometimes went blind or mad or both, of course they weren't aware of the cause at the time so a blanket ban was put on eating the flesh of pigs. Pigs carry two parasitic worms, Trichinella spiralis and Taenia sodium which can be rather dangerous, nowadays pigs are kept away from sewage and normally are not infected by the parasites but it is still a good idea to cook pork well.
