You nailed it!  We should play this one at the next rally.

"Darkie's Dream" was probably the most popular "classic banjo" solo published.  I have yet to run across a stack of sheet music that did not have a copy (sometimes two).   It was in continuous publication until Gatacomb sold their library to Walter Jacobs.  Jacobs reissued it in both A and C notation and it remained in print well into the teens and later. Essex offered it in C notation (I presume without permission) as he retitled the sequel).

I am attaching "The Story of The Darkie's Dream" from a 1908 issue of the Cadenza.

Bickford did a later arrangement in the key of C with the banjo in standard tuning.  It is interesting to try and play it after learning the original with bass elevated.
