The phto shows the underside of a typical Nechville armrest. Visible is the recessed groove that goes over the rim and the edge that - ideally - sits on the very edge of the head.
I have found that these rests fit most banjos ex-factory, but they fit better if adjusted to suit the specific banjo. Obviously, things like diameter and number of tension hooks can cause an armrest to need some adjustment. The one above has had the tension hook recesses reamed out slightly to take a 10.5 inch head and 22 hooks.
Once in place and screwed on tightly, they don't move.
