Dow, the cause of death was a sudden cardiac arrest. Here is an excerpt from a letter from his daughters that arrived in the mail a few days ago. It cuts deep. I can hardly type the words without breaking up. Here is an excerpt:

"It is with deep sorrow that we share the very sad news about the passing of both our parents, Harold (Hal) E. Allert and Susan P. (Ciara) Allert. During their 49 years of marriage, Hal and Susan shared many adventures and good times with the people in their lives, and in doing so, created lasting friendships.

Hal passed away in his home on December 20. 2017 of a sudden cardiac arrest and felt no pain.

Susan passed away in her home on January 5. 2018 of what we can only describe as a broken heart and a longing to be with Hal once again. She passed away peacefully in her sleep, with family nearby, and she is no longer in pain."

There is going to be a memorial gathering —with banjos — ion February 24, in Spokane.

I'd like to add that he maintained and posted the Classic Banjo Radio streaming. I have shaped hundreds of banjo thimbles and ran many miles on a treadmill (not at the same time) to that "station."

I wonder if there is a way we can reach out to his widow to get his digital sound files and host a similar thing on the ning site in his honor? He had assembled a ton of great (and rare) recordings.

He will be missed!!

This is indeed a loss to the classic banjo community, In a way Hal was responsible for me finding classic banjo. He posted a bunch of scans on his website of folios and instruction books (books from Marc Smith) before any of that stuff was available online. It was with those books that I learned the basics of classic banjo using A notation.
