A Site Dedicated to all enthusiasts of Classic Style Banjo
This is the first published composition by Stoughton, written when he was just 16 years of age. He was an organist and composer of a wide genre of music including a ballet and two operettas. This cakewalk was his only ragtime composition. I have never heard the expression 'Cutting the Monkey' used in the UK but I am aware that to some in the US, it may have racial overtones. The tune itself is a very good example of early ragtime and suits the banjo very well. The score and midi are in the library.
