Cuttin' Monkey Shines (1899) Roy Spaulding Stoughton

This is the first published composition by Stoughton, written when he was just 16 years of age. He was an organist and composer of a wide genre of music including a ballet and two operettas. This cakewalk was his only ragtime composition. I have never heard the expression 'Cutting the Monkey' used in the UK but I am aware that to some in the US, it may have racial overtones. The tune itself is a very good example of early ragtime and suits the banjo very well.The score and midi are in the library.
