Well...that is so cool, Marc....I'm really happy you shared that about the Scorcher....that makes sense and I was unaware of the slang meaning of the time....very cool....NEAT cover too!

I think bikes were all the rage then....safety bicycles they called them....the ones the Wright Bros made and similar to what we'd recognize today, not the large front wheel ones.

Makes sense all the subject matter would translate to the music of the time.

Joel and Shawn...Wheelman's March....that's interesting...not sure if I've seen that one or not...I MAY have a copy of a brown wax or Berliner I used to have somehwere of Scorcher...I'll have to dig through all my unorganized transcription copies sometime.

Hi Chris,

Hi Marc,

Hi Shawn,

I think you will find that the "Wheelman's March" is the same as the "L.A.W. March," just transposed for C notation and published by CE for the British market. My copy of the Wheelman's is a copy of a copy and thus not very good, but the ABF library has it (and also the A notation L.A.W. March) available to members.

Hi Chris

Speaking of Ossman, banjos and bicycles, VLO recorded Rosey's "The Scorcher" for Columbia c 1899 and Berliner, 1900. He also wrote "The Wheelman's March".

He must have been a serious wheelman himself.

Remember the times...."safety bicycles" (the kind we would all recognize now), aviation, safety razors, and banjo music...along with automobiles, phonographs, etc....were all the rage of new technology then, and all of that rolled into one period of the industrial revolution with banjo music as the soundtrack is all very attractive to me...it's like all one big ball of sociological/cultural techno wax.

Anyway, old post, but just joined up and was intrigued by your mention of bicycles, Joel.

PS-And Richard's comment about the lowly servant emptying chamber pots being a "Gossoon"....

In England many years ago, the most sought after job in the government was the fellow who emptied the King's chamber pot....he had the closest access to the King and actually had political impact from this contact...he was like the point go to man for all the lobbyists....HE likely was not called a "Gossoon"....LOL

Funny, when I right click on the word "gossoon" and highlight "look up in dictionary" the definition I get is "gossoon noun Irish, a lad.
So I guess the title means the happy boy.

Dear Trapdoor2, I always wondered what a gossoon was until recently when I was told that it is a an Irish term for a very lowly servant, something like the scullery maid who lit the fires and emptied the chamber pots.
