Hi there - I now am the lucky owner of an SS Stewart Imperial banjeaurine.  However, one of the pegs feels loose and the string drops out of tune very quickly (the other pegs have a tight, resistant feel and are holding in tune whereas this peg tuner feels a bit 'loose' when you turn it).  I thought that tightening the slotted screw would resolve it but, to my surprise, it is already tight and won't budge.  So I'm wondering if I need to remove the peg and apply chalk or pegpaste or do something else?  Does anyone have any ideas?  Here is a photo of the tuners.

Many thanks.

Try loosening the screw, removing it, cleaning it and then look at and say something nice to it. Then put it back in, tighten it up and see what happens. If that doesn't work you could try a new screw of the same size. If that doesn't work old tuners can be found and you could replace the whole thing, but try the other things first.

Thanks for the advice Jody, I will try your steps and see if it improves.

Here is another suggestion you might try: Remove the screw and clean it up good. Then take a dry bar of Lava soap and rub the screw on the soap until the threads are coated. Then put the screw back into the tuner. The soap will create a grittiness on the threads of the screw and should help hold it in place. Hope this helps. Good luck.

Thanks for the tip Jackie!

In the meantime, I changed the washers and that seems to have done the trick.

Best, Carrie

Great. Glad you got the problem solved. Now, you can enjoy the banjo.
