Hi gang, does anyone have a copy of Joe Morley's arrangement of "The Whistler and His Dog"? I can just hear that opening slide..... ;-). Thanks!

Hi Thomas,

It looks like you will have to whistle that slide, as per instructions ;-)

I have added the score, as arranged by Morley, to the MUSIC LIBRARY for you...  good luck!

I do have a photo of Whistler's Mother if that helps:

:-))

Thanks! I hope I'll have a rockin' good time with this. I'm Impressed to know James and his mum were so neo-classic!

I tabbed this one out a few years back...except for that whistle. ;-) Not the best TAB in the world...but functional. If you want it, let me know and I'll clean it up a bit and post it.

Oh, and Arthur Pryor was Sousa's 1st trombonist and leader of the band in Sousa's absence (primarily for recordings, which Sousa hated). Great musician.

Ooooh!..That's tricky!..I've kept dogs for over 40 years and I haven't come across one yet that can bark in 6/8 time!...Steve.

Trapdoor2, I would appreciate it.  My tabbing skills aren't very good yet.

There is a Youtube of the Arthur Pryor Band playing the piece in 1913.

I've read that Sousa hated the recordings so much that he wouldn't allow the band to use his name, hence the Arthur Pryor Band.  They actually recorded extensively.

No problem, Thomas. I think I can take a look at it tonight. It is all there (in TAB), just needs a bit of smoothing out.

Sousa's band started recording quite early, and under Sousa's name. I have Berliner discs from the 1890's that are titled using the name "Sousa's Band". Pryor left Sousa's band in 1902 and formed his own band, The Arthur Pryor Band, they're seperate entities.

I simply looked this stuff up, but also found a great story. It seems that while touring Germany with the Sousa band, all German military trombonists were required to go listen to him play. They were so astonished at his capabilities that they made him take his trombone apart for inspection, insisting that no human could play so well!

This is not an easy arrangement by any standards!

Carolyn and I did it at Backwell 4 or 5 years ago with concertina doubling the tune. I asked Richard if he would like to whistle but he politely declined.

Finally...

I originally did this TAB a few years ago...and I was never really happy with it. There are a couple of bars here and there that just don't sound quite right. They're per the notation but they sound 'off' someow. Also, the software (TablEdit) has no subroutine for triplet grace notes...so in several places, I had to place the triplet-g-n in the tail end of a preceeding measure to get the MIDI to sound right. So, all the notes are there...but you'll want to use the notation to get the exact timing.

Of course, the whistle and the dog bark are up to you!

Wonderful!!!  Thanks Trapdoor2!
