My wife decided that I am getting too old and knackered (the cheek of it!) to spend weeks climbing up and down scaffolding fixing my leaking glass roof, so today had to be a RELAXATION DAY… NO ROOF REPAIRS and NO BANJO.

She had it all planned, walk to town, lunch in a Pub then a trip to the Blackpool Tower Ballroom to watch the ballroom dancing…  ughhh  ;-(

But  SWHTBO  (She who definitely has to be obeyed) had decided, so off we went.

Lunch was good, beer was good, ballroom dancing … ughhh, as expected… BUT, my banjo friends, my time was not wasted !!

Watching John Bowdler play the famous Tower Ballroom Mighty Wurlitzer was very good but instead of watching the ballroom dancing… ughhh, my eyes wandered round the amazing architecture:

This is a massive ballroom and the ornate ceiling is around 100ft high decorated beautifully and the amazing plasterwork finished in gold leaf.

I noticed a new slogan that we could use for our Classic Banjo Site too:

BID ME DISCOURSE. I WILL ENCHANT THINE EAR  ..or maybe not !!

Then I spotted them:

Is that a Zither Banjo?

…and this an Open Backed Banjo?

Was I correct?  They are very high. Then it became obvious as one dear lady had been so overcome by the banjo playing that she forgot herself and danced in gay abandon:

If you ever get chance to visit Blackpool Tower, do make the effort.  It is a beautiful old building that is currently being fully restored to its former glory… banjos and all.

So now it's goodbye from Blackpool, the Mighty Wurlitzer and the banjos.

Wouldn't you love to rise up through the floor playing your banjo? :-)

Wow...I've tried to add a comment three times now...each time it has been deleted somehow. Once more into the breach!

I saw the Blackpool Ballroom on Antiques Roadshow last week (orignally shown in 2009). They had a nice little vignette on the room itself and the mighty Wurlitzer.

My wife occasionally is required to attend conferences out in Mesa, AZ and always stops here: Another Mighty Wurlitzer One of these days I'd like to see it myself.

Trevor, quite the opposite really. I often wish that the floor would open up when I am making a mess of my playing ;-)

Marc, I don't know how your posts could be deleted. I am pleased that you got there in the end. The world is full of coincidences. The Blackpool Tower Ballroom on Antiques Roadshow in Alabama... last week ... amazing coincidence!!!!

Not to mention Strictly Come Dancing once a year. I can tell you are a big fan, Ian :-)

Marc - I'm going to be in Phoenix, AZ next weekend and will definitely swing by Mesa (very nearby) to check out that Wurlitzer.  Thanks for making me aware of it!

I won't be eating there as I get my Phoenix pizza fill here.   Amazing stuff.   :)

Enough non-banjo nonsense, ta ta!

Oh my. I'll take a "Wiseguy" to go, please!
