A couple of weeks ago David Wade posted that a new banjo club had started here in the UK. I saw this and featured it under NOTES on our front page. Can you give us any more details Dave?  Are you still looking for members? What goes on and what styles are played there?

Also are there any other Banjo clubs (that play Classic Style too) around the world who would like to be publicised on our site?  Perhaps we can start a world directory of where people can hear and play Classic Banjo?

:-)

Well, there is the Edinburgh Banjo Club.  It's mostly Bluegrass and Old-time players with the addition of our Banjo Quartet playing classic pieces  - that page is a bit out of date, I have linked a fair few videos on this site or they are in Rob's YouTube channel if you want them all.  The classic pieces seem to go down well with the others and its a great environment to play in front of.

You can join that or better still join our quartet (weekly rehearsals) and turn the quartet into a quintet or..whatever six/seven/eight players is :-)

Thanks Ian, despite Baildon only being " the other side of the hill" I had not heard about anything going until Club Organiser Ron made a raid on the pubs in Otley during the annual Folk Festival. The Formby Society have been coming for years and usually play out the back of the Black Bull (recently featured in a two part story in "DCI Banks" on ITV). Ron has been running the ukulele and mandolin clubs for 18 months and only recently detected enough interest in starting the banjo club. The Baildon Club is the old Conservative Club on the roundabout - it was bought out by it's memebers so no longer has political affiliatons and serves a good pint of Black Sheep. Wednesday night is banjo night, Thursday ukuleles. I went across a week last Wednesday and found myself put "on the spot" a bit having to give a brief presentation about the history of the banjo in the UK and zither-banjos in particular. I then took the 5-string players off into a seperate room and we started work on Park Crescent March at a nice steady pace. The tenor players went into another room and worked on some Irish tunes.

I have commitment every other Wednesday so I am going there alternate Wednesday covering basic stuff and gently introducing Classic style. Everything seems to be well recevied, Ron charges members a £1 per session that keeps things running and isn't going to wreck anybody's houshold budget!

As we build a core membership there are much wider opportunities for multi-partplaying -  I am now the official custodian of the Aston Orchestra's library so there is no shotage of reportoire.

I know we have one or members within easy striking distance - frequent bus and brilliant train service from Bradford and Ilkley and a short walk up the hill. Let's hope we will see them there.

David
