Whilst researching this tune, I came across a post from Marc made back in 2013 saying how it was one of his favourite Johnson rags and it's not hard to realize why so here it is, fully 'banjofied'. I've made a few minor changes from the original piano score to make it more suitable for the banjo. In particular the chords in bars 34 and 35 would have been played on 3rd and 4th strings which sounded a bit 'clunky' to me so I inverted them and moved them up to 7th and 8th position. The score and midi are in the library...Steve.

LOL. This is such a lovely rag...and a great banjo arrangement to do it justice. The Trio is probably my favorite part...but that exaggerated walk up in octaves in the A part is sheer genius.

Hats off!

Thanks Marc, it's my favourite arrangement so far, I had to modify the octave walk slightly by stopping it at C in 10P and replacing the octave D with a single note on the open first string otherwise you'd have been stranded in 12P making the rapid shift to 5B difficult to do smoothly. Also on the piano score it's played in the bass clef. Maybe you could tab it out sometime?....Steve.

Already on it, Steve. I started a TAB file as soon as I saw you'd arranged it. :-)

Wonderful Rag !

Thanks Remi, I don't think Charles Johnson ever wrote a bad piece of music. I've got three more Johnson arrangements completed which I'll ask Ian to post in due course...Steve.

Well, that's interesting! "Tune to D when playing with Club"...tune aDAC#E...which is simply Capo 2 these days.

Doubling the "walk up" melody notes is a good method. I'll have to hear and compare both versions...

I notice that Banjo players like very much the rags of Charles L Johnson ! That's s cool, you're right Steve his rags are surely all good; but I don't know much his music, I just arranged Dill Pickels, but probably I will do Cum Bac after, or Blue Goose that I think you also arranged in collaboration with Thereallyniceman !

Hi Marc, you could mix and match and use the doubling notes on the repeat bars...Steve.

Yah, I think they're close enough that I can get your arrangement finished and then do some simple mods to get the Trinkaus arrangement. I would prefer the octave walk as it is closer to the piano score...but we'll see!

OK, I have Steve's arrangement keyed in, just needs a little cleanup. I've started the Trinkaus arrangement and right off the bat it has a mistake. First note/chord should be dotted quaver followed by a semiquaver. Makes the beginning stumble just a bit. There's a couple of rhythmic differences in other syncopations as well...they sound a bit odd in comparison but work on their own.

Otherwise, the Trinkaus arrangement is a bit simpler...but it moves into the higher registers early on (16 fret, so far). The doubled note 'walk up' works as I had guessed. Just a different way of getting there!

I'll try to get it done soon and post TAB for both.

Ok, well that was fun! I've listened to the Trinkaus version enough now that I'm not sure if that first bar is a mistake after all...just different. IOW, it works on its own.

Steve, I found one mistake in your dots: measures 7 and 15, the D should be D#. You've got it marked as 4B (as is proper) but missing a sharp.

I did make a very few changes in your fingering, mostly I tend to use the 5th string a little more than you do. An example: measures 8 and 16.

See attached for my Tab of both.
