Hello all. Elderly Instruments has been out of the Sands' strings for sometime for reasons unknown to me. I need some strings and am used to his strings. When I look at Aquila's range of strings, my head hurts. I want something that is close to Chris's medium gauge. What should I get in the Aquila line? Did Chris stop making strings?

I am pretty sure Chris Sands didn't make the strings himself. They are good strings, who ever the manufacturer is or was. Aquila strings are also good. But they do not feel or respond or sound like Chris Sands strings. I use Aquila Nylgut on a few of my banjos because it makes the banjos sound better than any other string I've tried. On other banjos they sound dreadful. The set to use is this one:

I like how these strings feel. they allow me to play hard. They tend to have a shorter sustain than nylon and they produce a popping sound that I like. Except for when they don't.

Avoid the unwound bass and avoid the red formulation. I really wish Aquila would stop "improving" its products. the old nylgut was better than the new nylgut and the new nylgut is better than the red.

Jody says "if it ain't broke, don't fix it".
