Curly is a great loss. I loved the videos of his lively and fun playing. Thank you for posting this.

That's a great idea to celebrate Curly, i don't know him personally but i found some nice videos where Carole Anne ans him playing old timey music and classic banjo with C. BUEHLING.

Zarana is one of my favourites. Thanks for posting  this video.

Here is Classic Banjo.ning.com's dedication to Curly Miller:

RUSSIAN RAG

What a great player Curly was.

I feel fortunate to have gotten to meet and talk with Curly and Carole Ann back in early March of this year up in Lebanon, TN. I have their CDs loaded into my ipod so I usually get a daily dose of "Old 78's" on my drive to and from work.

Thanks for posting this, Greg. Curly Miller was not only a great player; when he, Carole Anne and Clarke Buehling sat down to play together, the effect was magical. Those videos are some of the best Classic banjo we'll ever hear.

Can I ask what Curly is playing? It sounds like a cello banjo but isn't. It looks a bit like a guitar tuned banjo, but again I don't think it is. The frets look closer together than my cello banjo too, which should make the thing easier to get your fingers round. As a cello banjo player I am envious.  I want one please, and very soon.

In "Temptation Rag", Clarke Buehling is playing a Gold Tone "cello banjo", which has a shorter scale than most regular banjos (24-3/4"). They're still available from Gold Tone. Curly is in the hat, playing a standard banjo.

Thank you for this.  I have found someone with one to sell, and I might retire my ancient and venerable Clifford Essex cello, which is an interesting instrument to play from a historical point of view, but might have some equally interesting challenges.  I feel an allegiance to the old warhorse.

Thank you for this information, I shall act upon it.

Anthony,  most people I know and know of who acquired a Gold Tone cello banjo have stopped playing them.  There are plenty of youtube videos of this instrument. Check them out and judge for yourself. In my opinion they are not very bad and not very good. They are bland and without much punch or character. Gold Tone does make good regular five string banjos, but this *thing* seems more of a novelty than a viable instrument.
