From "Choice Selections for the Banjo" by Geo. L. Lansing, published by L. B. Gatcomb Company, 1890. I learned this piece from the original sheet music which...
You nailed it! We should play this one at the next rally.
"Darkie's Dream" was probably the most popular "classic banjo" solo published. I have yet to run across a stack of sheet music that did not have a copy (sometimes two). It was in continuous publication until Gatacomb sold their library to Walter Jacobs. Jacobs reissued it in both A and C notation and it remained in print well into the teens and later. Essex offered it in C notation (I presume without permission) as he retitled the sequel).
I am attaching "The Story of The Darkie's Dream" from a 1908 issue of the Cadenza.
Bickford did a later arrangement in the key of C with the banjo in standard tuning. It is interesting to try and play it after learning the original with bass elevated.
Thanks very much for the info, Joel! Much appreciated..
