Holy sox! That is a "Middlebrooke" banjo, a very interesting design from the 1890's. I blogged about playing one a couple of years ago. They have scalloped frets and play very smoothly. I'll bid on it...but if the collectors get wind of it, I'll never be able to afford it! Dave Ball (Knoxville, TN player and luthier) has a whole collection of these things. I played one of his and thought it was really well made. Playing that scalloped neck was extremely smooth.

Thanks! 11 people bid on it...and I'm very pleased that I got it so cheaply.

Of course, now I'm looking for missing parts...for a banjo that was built for only one year, 118 yrs ago. ;-)
