"Well Steve , that adds another dimension to the whole discussion . I can certainly see how that would work , I'm thinking of tunes like Whistling Rufus where the Trio is almost like a separate tune . Well thanks for that , Regards , Mike..."

"I always view the trio as a tune within a tune. In a brass band, a cornet trio for example would be a solo, played by the cornet, within the main composition...Steve."

"Well, this all seems to be quite confusing , up to a point that is. Thinking of "syncopatin Shuffle" the Trio is the 5th part . Do you think that at the time of this sort of composition a Trio part was expected to give the music a certain…"

Mr Redpath, we meet at Broughton Castle, you had a booth with instruments and an OT open back banjo, vega if memory serves me. I was stationed at RAF upper Heyford 77-80 and played OT banjo. An Iida FB500 gibson copy. Still have it in fact. My former wife Julia and I lived in Banbury and would come visit on occasion to play and dine with you. I sold one of your guitars to a young lady at RAF Heyford. Last I remember your wife had a little one and then we got reassigned back to the USA. My email is wesmason56@hotmail.com. Headed to the  Galax VA Old Time  Fiddlers Convention next week. OT banjo contest is Thursday and Band it Firday and Sat evening. OT bad is Cornbread and Buttlermilk. Have placed as high as 9th which aint bad for a festival only band.  Hope to catch up with you.

I have tried Aquila but they wont oblige me by putting a set together so I don't really know where to go from here , any help would be much appreciated . Cheers Mike.......

Luscombe Banjo Pitch ?

I have an old Luscombe banjo, it's the 1888 patent with a 17 fret neck and an 11.5 inch hoop which has never lived up to my expectations tone wise . This has always confused me as the hoop must have been an expensive item to produce , then as it would be now . The other day I was playing through "Thoroughbred Hornpipe" by Thos J Armstrong , so I tuned the Luscombe down to the required tuning and what a revelation , for the first time the banjo sounded great , to my ears at least , even my…
