The Pearl Of The Harem. (1898)..Harry Guy..(as played by Vess Ossman and Fred Van Eps.)

I came across the midi of this tune in the Primeline Midi Library. Most of the midis in the library that I've used in the past have been for piano but this was obviously a banjo arrangement and the accompanying notes made reference to FVE and Vess Ossman.

I created a score from the midi and completed the attached arrangement. Ian then sent me a recording of the tune by FVE and a just about readable score by Clifford Essex. The similarity between the CE score, the FVE recording and the midi is so noticeable that they were most probably the source for the midi.

It's a great banjo tune but not the easiest to play without quite a few hours of hard practicing  The score and midi are now in the library...Steve.

I like it! The recording that I listened to online of FVE seemed a bit odd in that he really 'twangs' the bass string when it is struck open. Much louder than the rest of the piece and an odd stand-out. BONG!!!

The ABF has an arrangement of this for banjo but no name for the arranger. It is listed as "Hard" on the difficulty spectrum. No doubt about that!

Well done again, Steve. Thank you!

I have an arrangement for 3 parts that I put together from the sheet music. I have played it and it doesn't seem to difficult. Here is a MIDI with nylon guitar voice ( banjo voice sounds crappy)

Hi Hal, I have the same problem with my Finale software, the banjo voice it generates is awful, I don't think I've heard a half decent synthetic banjo sound anywhere yet...Steve.

The best banjo sound I have heard is from Sibelius but who wants to sell their car in order to buy the software. That is why I use the nylon guitar instead of the piano, it sounds like an instrument that is finger-picked and is pleasant to listen to.

Steve, I thought the Primeline MIDI site went down a number of years ago. I was able to get the entire library downloaded through various means but really missed the site. If it is the same one, it was hosted not too far from me as a website tacked onto a chemical company in Washington State. Do you have the link to Primeline?

Thanks, Steve. This is the one I remembered but it has been updated.

Hi Hal, I find this a good source for some of my arrangements, my Finale software will convert most of the midis to a readable score which I can then manipulate before beginning the arrangement....Steve.
