In case you would like to hear it Carrie, here it is:

THE AFGHAN PATROL

Not a favourite Ellis composition of mine, the title seems to be the best bit :-)

It's not all that great when played by the virtual banjoist who sounds literarily All Thumbs (not to be confused with the banjo solo Thumbs Up) but I like it. Something seems slightly awry in the first ending to the trio though. Does anyone know the date of publication? I hear things that suggest it could be a prototype for parts of Morley's "Zarana" and Cammeyer's "El Contrabandista".   But maybe I am being anachronistic.

You are right, Jody. If I could just teach the computer to use alternate fingering on the bass string I could be rich and famous.

Unfortunately with a piece which seems to boast about actually reaching the 6th fret, and only venturing past it once or twice, it is a little difficult not for it to sound a bit bassy as about 50% of the notes are on the bass string!!  :-)

Jody..anachronistic?  I didn't know you were afraid of spiders ;-)

Anna Kronistic. She was the muse of Herbert Ellis. Her family was from Croatia. *She* was afraid of spiders. And of the upper frets of a banjo.

Thanks Ian.  I like it - the A part really reminds me of another tune but what is it....?

A bit like the intro to Grimshaw's "A Spanish Romance" ?

A whiff of Spanish Romance?

Yes, that's it!  Thank you for putting that 'ear worm' to rest :)

And...I have the tab done.

Thank you to Jody and Marc.

I have now added the score, with Marc's TABlature, to the MUSIC LIBRARY.

It begins  almost the same as the start of El Contradbandista but played one octave lower.
