Can somebody who owns a Special XX measure the width of the rim?  I just realized that my Concert Grand has a thin hoop that looks to be about as thin as that of a Special XX, and I'd like to compare measurements.

Using a digital micrometer that I normally use for strings I find that my XX rim is between .43 and just over .45  inches. Quite a bit less than half an inch, or  a bit over a centimeter. It depends where I measure. I went as deep as I could because the "rim of the rim" is a bit worn in places.  I am pretty sure that I have seen different diameters on different Special XX banjos from the same era. This is just from looking, not measuring but if my memory is right, it seemed pretty obvious that there were differences, comparing two on the same occasion.

Very interesting- mine is exactly 1 cm all the way around.  The other Concert Grands I've seen photos of have much thicker rims.  Maybe Clifford Essex changed the name from Special XX to Concert Grand before they started making them with thicker rims?

My impression is that there was no standardization. I think there may be thin and thicker of both Concert Grand and Special XX.

Using a digital micrometer on the rim of my rosewood "Clifford Essex Co" labelled Special XX gives thicknesses that vary from 0.400 to 0.435 ins.
