Setting Up a Resonator Banjo

I just picked up a new banjo- a 5-string Vegaphone with a resonator.  I like the added volume and quick response that a resonator provides, but along with those aspects comes an increase in sustain and reverb that isn't pleasing to my ears.  Anyone got any tips for setting up a resonator banjo and how the setup should differ from that of an open back?  I realize I can always just remove the flange and resonator, but I'd lose some volume that way and it's very comfortable to hold with the resonator on.
