Sam Collins, One of the best players that you have never heard of !

Syd Turner was an amazing UK Classic Banjo player, but little is remembered about him nowadays.

He was friendly with the major players of the era, including Clifford Essex and became a lifelong friend of Richard Tarrant Bailey.

You can read more about him in a previous post from 2009 on this website:

Turner recorded under the pseudonym of Sam Collins and copies of recordings by him are exceedingly rare, but I have discovered two by him, one that I had not heard before.

... Just like buses, non for ages then two come along at once!

I think that you will agree that he deserves greater recognition, as he was a very good player indeed.

Sidney Edgar Turner passed away on March 21st . 1964 aged 82 years.

Thanks for this. Why do you suppose he used a different name? There are 2 recordings of Sydney Turner on the out-of-print CD The Tarrant Bailey Collection. One is a mazurka, "Sweet Hyacinth" and the other is a duet with Clifford Essex (yes, CE is actually playing), "A Bunch of Rags".  Here is a photo from the liner notes. "Bill" is Tarrant Bailey Junior.
