Vess L. Ossman recorded “Pretzel Pete” for Edison in 1907. It is subtitled “A German Ragtime” and contains at least one melody of German origin.

The second strain, familiar to many today as “Where Oh Where Has My Little Dog Gone?”, was originally a comic ballad written in 1864 by Septimus Winner, titled “Der Deitcher’s Dog”, set to the German folk tune "In Lauterbach hab' ich mein' Strumpf verlor'n".

The sheet music cover art depicts young Pete with pretzel, traditional clothing, wooden shoes and dachshund, all Germanic references at the time.

An arrangement was transcribed from recording many years ago in A notation, and later transposed to modern notation by Cliff Spaulding. That score is in C. But since Ossman recorded this for Edison in F, my transcription is in F.

So here are a restored recording, digital score playback, my notation and TAB for “Pretzel Pete”.

Brilliant!  Thanks so much for producing these transcriptions Shawn.  Many folk don't realise the amount of time and effort involved, so I hope that others, like I do,  appreciate all your hard work.

Where else on the Internet can you not only find professionally cleaned up original Ossman recordings, but also the scores in both notation and TABlature? !!

Member contributions are what keep this site alive, so come on everyone, if you like Classic Banjo please don't just take... but take part !

ps This is definitely one to go on my "must play" list :-)

Hi Ian

Thanks for your support.

Ossman once remarked that he particularly liked playing in F, and this is affirmed by his many recordings in that key.

This piece is a great opportunity for the CB enthusiast to get more familiar with playing in F and Bb.
