“Morningside Caprice” was published by S.S. Stewart in 1896.  Vess L. Ossman is credited as composer.  It is a lyrical dance, rhythmic but formal, the sort of piece that supports Stewart’s efforts to elevate the banjo. Give a listen to the score playback and I think you’ll hear what I mean.

It also marks a transition in Ossman’s career, as from about this point onward he embraced the new sound of the cakewalks and rags as they swept the world of popular music.
