Our mate Joel Hooks has kindly sent me a copy of a tutor book I have not seen before that was written by Fred Bacon.

Thank you Joel for all the time and effort involved in scanning and creating a PDF format of this tutor to share with us.

I have added the PDF for FREE download from the TUTOR BOOKS page.

Is it possible to download this collection? I tried but it gave me the old forbidden message.

Hi Jackie,

Thank you for pointing that out. For some reason there was a Unix permissions problem with the file !

I have fixed it now, so it should download OK...  I have moved it to near the top of the page.

Good luck with it.

Ian

ps. I hope that your shoulder is getting better.

Hi Ian,

Thanks for your reply, and my shoulder is healing nicely. Therapy is what I am doing now and it is going very well. Fortunately, I am able to enjoy my banjos. Thanks for your well wishes.

Also, I hope your elbow is doing better.

Jackie

Thanks for posting this Ian!

A sort of pet project of mine is to find instruction books that are the "best of each era."

I've done an initial read though and I like this one a lot for a "C" tutor.  This one explains all the normal intro stuff and then jumps right into alternate fingering.  The boring (but needed) exercises are minimum and the pieces are graded and interesting.  There is lots of tremolo stuff if one goes for that sort of thing.

The solos in the back look decent including a Ragtime duet.

And then there is his arrangement of "Old Black Joe"-- good luck!  First one to post a video of themselves playing it gets the original copy sent to them!

Seems simple enough, but with my elbow......

This is all you need to aim for to win Joel's prize:

OLD BLACK JOE Variations by Fred Bacon

I prefer the version on Page 19
