I posted this on the "minstrel banjo" site earlier today and the silence speaks volumes.

I was playing around with this one while watching the snow pile up here in New Hampshire and thought I'd ask.

In his "Medley of Southern Melodies" Fred Van Eps plays the following:

Massa's In The Cold Cold Ground

??? (titled "Essence" in the sheet music)

Kingdom Coming

Oh! Dem Golden Slippers

Carve Dat Possum

The second part has me baffled.  I'm usually pretty good at this but I've got nothing on this one.

Anyone have an idea?

Thanks

Well I thought I'd give a listen. I found the recording on youtube here:

I didn't recognize the tune either. It's not "Essence of Old Virginia". I don't know if this will help, but the Victor record label calls it "Essence Dance". Here it is:

Sorry Joel, I've heard this piece too much (as VE plays it) to suss it out. It isn't "Essence Of Old Virginia" or "Original Essence" from the old tutors. Best bet to nail it down would be Tim Twiss, I think. He's probably digging out of the snow as well. On the 1916 Victor recording label it is called "Essence Dance" (as seen in one of the youtube videos).

Looks like I was writing while Jody was posting!

No luck here either. I tried out online music recognition software, and still no hits.

As Lynn correctly points out though : "You could soon get fed up with that song!".

I have added the full score for "Medley of Southern Melodies" with piano part to the MUSIC LIBRARY.

Well, thanks for trying guys!  Funny how it was common enough not to need naming yet I cannot place it.

@Ian, true, it is catchy as heck and gets stuck in your head.  That is why I wanted the rest of it.
