Rob ran an excellent workshop again at Whitby yesterday - Park Crescent March was the chosen piece this went down well with many players joining in. Rob showed us some of the variations that Tom Barribal played in the Trio and suggested a much better way of playing the Coda. We then moved onto Joe George's Kissing Cup Waltz. Well done Rob, the workshop was well presented and some interesting discussions ensued.

Great to see John Willis there, complete with bowler hat!

I have created a new page with video lessons to help players new to the banjo, and those new to Classic Style, learn to play classic fingerstyle banjo.

The first five videos include an introduction to the of the style and details of the type of banjo used, its set-up and the type on music played. Future videos will give instruction on techniques and exercises which will lead on to playing a full 'Classic Style' banjo solo.

And...just in case anyone else wants to attempt "Queen Of The Burlesque", I have some files out of the archives:

Please remember that fingering is an individual thing...and often subject to change w/o notice. The original JAT publication, with the exception of the harmonics, is not fingered. Marc D. and I have chosen to depart somewhat from the published arrangement in places.

Somehow, today has been one of those "name that tune" days. I keep hearing tunes that are familiar...but I can't place 'em or cannot recall the name.

Here's one posted today to the Banjo Hangout. Nicely played in the classic style (except for the fingerpicks). The tune is one of those "standards" used in radio and TV (and probably the movies too) to evoke a dance setting. I agree with the last post, it was used a lot in cartoons as well.

Ok, I'm a dummy. It is "Rustic Dance" by C.R. Howell, ca.1898. Anybody seen a contemporary banjo arrangement?
Old Jazz Band Photographstag:classic-banjo.ning.com,2011-06-10:2667446:Topic:353342011-06-10T19:53:14.513Zthereallynicemanhttps://classic-banjo.ning.com/profile/thereallyniceman

I am in the Chris Sand's banjo group. It was great fun last year.

I am sure it will be this year too. Looking forward to it.

More of you on here ought to give some thought to going next year.

For anyone who feels that a metronome would be useful, have a look at this free download. http://www.nch.com.au/metronome/index.html

Even as a reasonably experienced player, I find using the metronome useful as I mainly play solo and it helps maintain a constant tempo when learning new tunes. It might also be useful for beginners and its free.

Plans for the Beginners' Page and Lessons are well under way... please keep watching. It may be a while but we will get there in the end!

I had a major computer crash this week and have had only limited access to the site. My very expensive backup drive failed on a restore to my Imac, so I was left with a broken computer and and damaged backup drive :-( I had a spare drive but again was stumped as data had been lost on my computer.

If anyone has tried to contact me since…
